Why Running?

Running has always been a complementary exercise for me to increase endurance for soccer, volleyball and other sports I did. While these efforts were limited to distances of mostly less than 10km, I signed up for my first race out of pure curiosity; the Standard Chartered Kuala Lumpur Marathon in 2011 doing the HM distance.

While waiting for my start I saw the Full Marathon category being flagged off. This was when I thought I can do this distance as well and I set the objective to do this before I turned 40. With only 6 months left to achieve this target, I signed up for 3 FM, PNM, PBIM and SCSM just to make sure I don’t depend on only one chance. I finished all 3 of them, improving by at least 20 minutes from race to race.

I accomplished my target of finishing a
FM before turning 40 and thought about focusing on soccer again. This was when I learnt that an inaugural FM in my hometown was being organized. This became my big next target and I didn’t want to put myself at shame at that race in my hometown.

I got myself a training plan and professional advice from Mark Williams, the head coach of SCKLM. With that I got hooked, with running as my main focus in sports. Today I run up to 90km a week.
