Alerts on the Garmin Fenix 5X and how it helped being a SCKLM 3:45 FM pacer

As a “Garmin sponsored athlete” I received the super multisports GPS watch Garmin Fenix 5X one week before Malaysias best running event, the Standard Chartered Kuala Lumpur Marathon (SCKLM). I was lucky enough to be chosen to be part of the 3 hours 45 minutes Full Marathon pacer team for this event.

As usual the event was perfectly organized and we, Muhammad Huzaifah Bin Johari, Lionel Lee and me as the 3:45 pacers, contributed maybe a tiny bit to it. We maintained a constant pace throughout the entire 42.195km and finished a few seconds before 3h:45min, bringing quite a number of followers safe over the finishing line.

Owning a Garmin Fenix 5X I made use of the “Alert” function to help me with my pacer task and keep my pace in check. Having to run an average pace of 5min:19sec per km to deliver the job, I set an alert based on pace between 5min:15sec and 5min:20sec on my watch. With this in place the Fenix 5X alerted me every few seconds should I run faster or slower than the given pace range. The alert is an acoustic and vibrating signal.

Here a short explanation how I set that alert:

Select the activity you want to set the alert (previously I copied the “Run” activity and renamed it to “Run 3:45 FM”)

Hold the MENU button (left centered button) to reach the activity settings

Enter the activity settings by pressing the top right button

Select “Alerts”

Select “Add New”

Select the alert you want to get, in this case I selected “Pace”

Set the faster pace of the pace range you want to set by selecting “On” under “Fast Alert”

Set minutes and seconds of the “Fast Alert”

Set the slower pace of the pace range you want to set by selecting “On” under “Slow Alert”

Set minutes and seconds of the “Slow Alert”

And done!

From now on and whenever you select the activity under which you set the alert, the Garmin Fenix 5X will alert you, should you move outside the programmed range.

There are quite a number of alerts you can set, such as cadence, distance, elevation, heart rate, pace, time, etc. Check out the Garmin Fenix 5X Owners Manual that can be downloaded from

The alert function is perfect for maintaining a certain pace, may it be for your tempo, speed or easy run. It helps you to control your heart rate and many other applications. Give it a try!
